  • The Adelaide Fringe Festival -  An Oriental Flair

We participated in the Adelaide Fringe Festival 2008 as visual artists and we were known as An Oriental Flair. It was our first showcase of artwork, focusing on Oriental arts & crafts, and exhibiting it in Thea Tea Shop, Adelaide. It was definitely an unforgettable experience!

Designed by Steve Chen

This was an intricate piece of artwork designed by Steve Chen. The Yangqin was already made but the framing and carvings were designed and created from scratch. There is a night light which glows and brings out the design clearer in the dark. The butterfly stops to listen to the pleasant music being played, a depict of the love of music the butterfly has for the instrument....

Artwork by Erica Chen

This was a presentation of Chinese papercuttings, which is traditionally one of the oldest Chinese crafts of the Chinese culture. Erica has been doing it since young and her talents lie in Chinese papercuttings and knottings (below). Chinese papercutting is an amazing craft which requires patience and dedication to complete. The designs can also be huge depending on the occassion!

Chinese knottings (below) are a traditional form of artwork by the Chinese as well. They are based on harmony and balance, which incorporates all aspects of life and these knottings used to be made for many different purposes too, from home designs to practical uses. It has come a long way and it will continue to expand we believe!!

  • 2009: WOMAD The Three Anangu Stories

pic29

In February and March 2009, Better World Arts in association with the WOMADelaide Foundation presented an intensive cultural workshop between Anangu artists from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands and the selected artists.

Storytelling, song, dance and visual representation merge with spiritual elements to tell Three Anangu Stories. After five days of artist workshops to capture important traditional stories in performance and recorded form, WOMADelaide featured artists creating large collaborative paintings, performing and teaching dances, and exhibit paintings, rugs, landmarks, star constellation photos, tools and sacred objects that relate to the three stories.

It was an honour to be part of the project and it was truly a learning experience to have worked with the Anangu artists. Not only was there the opportunity to create music, I also had fun creating artwork!

This is an inma that we learnt of, the Seven Sisters Inma. The Pitjanjara is the story which is sung to a tune which i noticed was in a pentatonic scale. It inspired me to have the music noted down in accordance to ancient Chinese music notation methods, which is in the pentatonic scale, known as Zheng Wu Yin ÕýÎåÒô pronounced 'Gong' 'Shang' 'Jue' 'Zhi' ‘Yu' ¡¸¹¬¡¢ÉÌ¡¢½Ç¡¢Õ÷¡¢Óð¡¹.
In ancient theology, the five sounds (notes) are related to the five elements, our five organs and more.
Thus, I hope this would provide a more wholistic meaning to the Inma as well as my understanding of it.

  • ZooFest 2009

In conjunction with the arrival of the pandas, it has been great being part of the Adelaide Zoo's multicultural program to celebrate multiculturalism and promote the pandas' arrival! It has been enjoyable, despite the heat! and we definitely look forward to more opportunities in collaboration in the near future!
